Adventure tourism

It can be said that adventure can be found in any traveling experience. Yes, even the most mundane trips can be full of little adventures that fuel content for stories years after they’ve been lived. But there are people that prefer to take travel to greater levels where each element pushes the limits. Adventure tourism is travel that seeks the extreme. Locations well off the beaten path, the methods of getting there, or traveling to some of the world’s danger zones, adventure tourism is not for the faint of heart. For those looking for exotic travel the purpose is to escape the everyday and make every moment of the trip one to be remembered. The expression ‘no pain, no gain’ applies as adventure tourism is not about the comforts of home, but rather throwing those comforts to the wind in exchange for the unexpected – whatever it may be!

Differing levels of extreme

Not everyone wants to risk life and limb for an adventure. Tourism options for those looking to give their heart a jump without the chance of having it stop can find many travel options for organized ‘safe’ adventure tourism. Mountain biking trips in the Rockies, hiking and mountaineering in Nepal, and bungee jumping in New Zealand are just a few examples of ways travelers can escape the ordinary without too much worry. Plenty of tour operators offer packages to less-traveled destinations where other like-minded travelers can experience new ways of seeing the world. Planning through a travel professional is the best way to enter the world of adventure tourism for first-time thrill seekers.

Pushing the limits

For those who would rather not book through tour operators, instead setting out for an experience of true risk-taking, the sky is limit. Extreme trekking through jungles, climbing the world’s tallest peaks, and cycling through war zones provide only a glimpse into what is possible if you are willing. Some go as far as visiting disaster zones and touring some of the world’s most dangerous and depressing ghettos. The main decision to make is whether nature or manmade destinations get you excited.

Know what you are getting into

Lots of people say they’d like to climb Everest, explore Antarctica, or sail the globe solo. All are great ideas, but require a great deal of preparation. Adventure tourism requires both physical and mental training, some of which can take months. Find others that have already conquered what you aspire to in order to learn what is needed. Don’t simply assume you will be able to handle the challenges that lie ahead, many of which will be unplanned.

Hope for the best, be prepared for the worst

Every travel has its risks, but adventure tourism has the potential to end badly. There is a reason that it’s thrilling. Be sure to pay a visit to your doctor before traveling to ensure your body is up to task for what lies ahead. Also, travel insurance is a must for all trips, but adventure tourism may require an added layer of protection. Make sure that repatriation is included in the insurance policy. You may not want to consider it, but should that parachute fail to open, or if the warring parties turn their guns on you, make sure your body makes it home.
