Maldives re-opens spas after claims of prostitution

The announcement to allow spas to resume operations came six days after a ban was implemented due to reports of prostitution at some establishments. Following an investigation the Maldives president said that no evidence of prostitution could be found, despite the claims made by Islamic hardliners. Major demonstrations led by the opposition Adhaalath party called for the closure of all spas and massage centers that were said to be operating as brothels. The closures affected both small businesses and major resorts. The short-lived ban sent a shock wave through the Indian Ocean island nation that depends on tourism to fuel its economy. Made up of over 1200 coral islands and atolls, the Maldives is home to 400,000 mostly Sunni Muslims. However, each year more than 800,000 tourists make their way to the white sandy beaches, some paying thousands of dollars a night to sleep in picturesque settings. In the past year there has been an increase in calls from within the conservative Muslim establishment to halt the sale of alcohol in some areas and prevent direct flights from Israel.

Travel to Maldives to escape the winter blues

The Maldives is the perfect place to flee the winter doldrums. Beautiful beaches and clear waters will bring back that tan line you’ve been missing. Take the time to choose the island and resort that suits your travel interests. The Maldives are truly isolated, so finding yourself in the wrong hotel could make for a bad experience, despite the incredible setting. Visits to other islands are possible, including picnicking on a deserted one.
